Italia ha dado un paso de gigantes para clasificarse para los cuartos de final del Campeonato de Europa Femenino de la UEFA 2013 tras vencer por 2-1 a Dinamarca un partido muy disputado en el Estadio Örjans vall de Halmstad. Con este triunfo, las italianas suman cuatro puntos mientras que las danesas se quedan con uno en Grupo A.

Las jugadoras de la selección italiana lamentaron el no haber conseguido el triunfo sobre Finlandia pese a haber sido superiores durante el partido, mientras que la portera finlandesa alabó la actuación defensiva de su equipo.

La portera finlandesa Tinja-Riikka Korpela comentó con modestia a UEFA.com que simplemente "hizo su trabajo con sus paradas" después de ayudar a su selección a lograr un empate sin goles ante Italia en el partido inaugural del Campeonato de Europa Femenino de la UEFA de 2013. La selección de Andrée Jeglertz pasó gran parte del partido defendiendo en su terreno de juego, y la centrocampista Annika Kukkonen elogió la impecable actuación defensiva de su equipo. Mientras tanto, la delantera italiana Melania Gabbiadini cree que la actuación ofensiva de su selección mereció una mayor recompensa.

Nigeria se impuso con gran solvencia a Italia por 0-4 en la última jornada del Grupo B y clasificó para cuartos de final de la Copa Mundial Femenina Sub-20 de la FIFA Japón 2012 como primera de su sona. El partido, celebrado el 26 de agosto en Kobe, marcó además la eliminación de Italia.

Las italianas, con solo un punto en su casillero, necesitaban ganar por dos goles de diferencia para seguir en el torneo, mientras que a Nigeria le bastaba con el empate. Pese a ello, las africanas salieron a por todas y se adueñaron de la pelota desde el inicio.

Tras una primera ocasión de Desire Oparanozie (15'), Francisca Ordega abrió el marcador culminando una buena combinación entre Oparanozie y Ugo Njoku (0-1, 22'). Italia, que hasta entonces apenas inquietado a las nigerianas, mejoró su juego, aunque no creó mucho peligro. Con el marcador a favor, las Halconas siguieron controlando las acciones y Ordega amplió distancias al filo del descanso (0-2, 40').

Romania qualify, England and Serbia shine

Romania booked their UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship place with a game to spare, while Serbia and England both climbed top of their groups with significant victories. 

 Romania became the first side to qualify for this summer's UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship, which will be the first female final tournament the country has competed in. In the same section 2010 winners France got their first win while Serbia and England both moved into commanding positions in their sections.
Group 1
Last year's runners-up Norway fell 3-1 to a Portugal side who took control through first-half goals by Vanessa Malho and Rita Gonçalves and then killed off their opponents with Diana Silva's injury-time strike, after Helene Clausen Haavik had raised Norwegian hopes. With Nicky Van Den Abbeele and substitutes Tine Schrijvers and Anne Muni giving Belgium victory over the Czech Republic, all four teams now have three points apiece.
Group 2
Sweden striker Elin Rubensson hit a hat-trick to ensure the mini-tournament hosts recovered from Magdalena Knysak's early penalty to beat Poland 3-1. The Scandinavians remain level on points with holders Germany, their next opponents, who earned a second successive 2-0 victory, as Jennifer Cramer and Melanie Leupolz found the net against Northern Ireland.
Group 3
Romania built on their opening win over France by beating Iceland to secure their progress. Andrea Herczeg gave them a third-minute lead and skipper Ştefania Vătafu secured the victory in the 75th minute. France, 2010 winners, got their first points as Viviane Asseyi's solitary late goal decided a tight match against the Netherlands to give them hope of progressing as best runners-up.
Group 4
Serbia are a point away from sealing their first appearance in a UEFA women's final tournament after Nevena Damjanović struck twice in a stunning 4-2 victory over Denmark. Milan Rastavac's side looked to have missed their chance when they relinquished a 2-0 lead, but goals from Jelena Čanković and Damjanović earned a win that leaves them three points clear at the summit. A draw on Thursday against Switzerland, 2-0 victors over the Republic of Ireland, would be enough to secure top spot.
Group 5
The games in Sochi (Spain v Russia, Italy v Scotland) were postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. They may now take place on Tuesday.
Group 6
Hosts England are favourites to progress after thumping neighbours Wales 6-0 to climb three points clear at the top. Bethany England scored the first goal after 41 minutes and also got the last while in between Nikita Parris fired a hat-trick. Sherry McCue claimed perhaps the pick of the goals, with an unstoppable 30-metre strike. Austria bounced back from their loss to Wales by defeating Finland thanks to goals by skipper Sarah Zadrazil and Verena Aschauer.

Italy ready to celebrate after Russia win

"Something really strange would have to happen" for Italy not to qualify said coach Pietro Ghedin after a 2-0 win against Russia, whose players reflected on their costly defeat.

Goals from the evergreen Patrizia Panico on eight and 65 minutes gave Italy a 2-0 victory in Russia and total control of UEFA Women's EURO 2013 qualifying Group 1.
With seven perfect wins and 25 unanswered goals, Italy are now nine points ahead of Russia and will qualify for the finals in Sweden two games early with victory against the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on 16 June, when coach Pietro Ghedin expects to "be able to celebrate". Russia's players admitted the early goal proved a blow from which they could not recover.

We have to wait a bit more to start celebrating. However, something really strange would have to happen now for us to miss out on qualification. Considering we have two games at home, only one away and are ahead on goal difference and head-to-head, I would say we are nearly there. I think we will be able to celebrate on 16 June and we deserve to because this group have matured in recent months and have improved in many aspects, technically and mentally.

Our coach told us about our opponents' tactics, about their habit of playing the ball behind the defence and warned us how to play. We had to score but we did not manage to do it. We are not satisfied with the result. We had to win and we wanted to win but the quick goal shocked us. We needed a lot of time to recover from it. Italy have always played a pressure game and are a team with character. We were lacking shots on goal and if had we managed to do this, Italy would have felt the danger. We have to win the rest of our games and hope that we will play at EURO 2013.

I don't know what the coach said but I think it influenced the game. It was very difficult for me to come on in such a complicated game. The Italians are very quick. We couldn't get the ball forward enough and we were unable to support the attack.

We were probably too nervous before the game and did not understand each other on the pitch very well. We tried to change the course of the game but unfortunately we only managed to do that in the second half. Italy are very strong and we prepared seriously but it turned out that we had to recover from the beginning. We could not play as we wanted to and had no chances to score.
